How to Ace Heat Questions in PSLE Science

Heat is one of the most commonly tested topics in PSLE Science, yet many students struggle with applying the concepts correctly in open-ended questions. From understanding heat transfer to explaining why certain materials heat up faster than others, mastering this topic requires more than memorisation.

In this guide, we will break down the key Heat concepts, common exam question types, and effective answering techniques to help students avoid common mistakes and score with greater confidence in the PSLE Science examination.

“Heat and Temperature” is a topic that is frequently tested in PSLE. There is at least one in the last 10 years and this is one question that students can easily excel in, if they follow a certain way of writing.

When it comes to heat questions, students will be tested on at least one of these 3 properties of heat:

  1. Heat transfer: Heat travels from a hotter area to a colder area.

  2. Expansion & contraction: Matter expands when heated, contracts when cooled.

  3. Conductors of heat: A good conductor of heat gains and loses heat faster than a poor conductor of heat.

Take for example …

PSLE Science 2025 Question 36(b):

Aisha took a jar out from a refrigerator. She could not remove the plastic lid at first.

Explain why she was able to remove the lid easily after leaving the jar at room temperature for some time.  [2]

Weak answer:

The lid expanded as the temperature increased, so she could remove the lid.

Model answer:

There was an increase in temperature when she took the jar out from the fridge, thus the plastic lid gained heat from the warmer surrounding air and expanded, thus loosening the grip on the glass jar, so she could remove the lid easily.

This question above is about heat expansion. We must always state “gain heat from… and expanded…” as marks are allocated to these words to show forth students’ understanding in the concept.
